three memories
one: "Maybe you're an alien..."
He is seven and hiding up in his sister's room while she contemplates just what they both had witnessed. She could have gone on about how this was after all his fault, it was he who kicked their father's football up on the roof, and so of course it was he who needed to retrieve it, and it was he who slipped when doing so, a slip that should have ended in a trip to the hospital. But no, instead of falling to what he could only guess should have been his death he had ended up suspended in midair - not for long, but long enough that he and Rissa both stared at each other eye to eye before he fell flat on his face.
"Its not like I actually remember you being born so...."
"Shut up Rissa! I'm not an alien!"
"That's what an alien would say Amery."
He doesn't want to believe his sister - but she has a point. No one just stays suspended from the air as if they were tied to some invisible rope. Maybe a super hero, but even at age seven he knows super heroes are works of fiction and he is no super hero. Does that really only leave the option of him being an alien? He doesn't know and it scares him. No doubt his face is still void of color even though they have been mulling over what happened for the better half of an hour. As his blue eyes meet his sister's gaze all he can do is beg for her silence on the matter.
"...please don't tell mum and dad Rissa - please."
two: Four years since the incident, four years since he sat holed up in his sister's room terrified about what sort of freak he must have been. He wishes it had just been a one time thing, that nothing else strange had happened but to note there has been at least 79 odd occurrences that he and Rissa both could recall. She kept his secret though - no matter how strange each occurrence was. They had always been short though, moments in time that ended as quickly has they had begun, moments he would have thought his imagination had Rissa not been there to see them too. Four years of this and they had no answers.
Seated in the back of the family car after another one of their father's press meetings all he could think about was how he wanted them to be back home so he could once again beat Rissa at smash brothers. But as the car pulled up into the drive of their family home his eyes caught sight of the strange man standing on the stoop. Something about this man made him wish the drive had taken longer - that some how this man was not just someone who had found himself lost among the large houses.
Even his parents had found themselves puzzled by the man, perhaps it was how he looked as if he had stepped out of the wrong time era or maybe they too had a sense that something was to come. Amery would never understand just what it was that convinced his parents to let the man come in and explain himself then again, most everything that happened that afternoon would become a blur to the eleven year old.
It had sounded like a badly played out joke. A wizard? Magic? A school full of children much like himself? It was crazy talk. he was Amery Cathal Cambell, he was just an ordinary boy - but even Amery knew that wasn't true. It was a lot to take in. He sat for hours with his parents while they talked about what to do. Should he go to this school? How would they explain it to their family? Their friends? His peers? What about the press when they asked where their son was? Hours and hours of chatter that started to go over his head.
At least now he knew though, he was in fact not an alien.
three: Why did she insist on constantly going on about him? Amery swore she was going to drive him mad if he had to hear her gush on about this guy for any longer. It was annoying. Did she think he was gay? Was that why she had no issue talking about other boys around him? They were best mates, him and Brie, but he wasn't a girl - he didn't need to hear all this girl stuff. That's what Caitlin was for wasn't she? For all that rubbish mindless girl chatter?
Its not like he's ever really felt bothered by any of this before. Or maybe this is just the first time he has started to realize it. She seems serious this time. The way her brown eyes fix on him, looking at him as if he is a god or something that she cannot look away from. Its disgusting. He can't help but wonder why she never looks at him that way. Isn't he the one who goes out of his way to do things for her? Isn't he the one who doesn't care what trouble he gets in as long as what he does makes her smile?
It makes his blood boil to see her look at the stupid git like that, to hear the way she rants about him. Amery would be willing to bet that the git doesn't even know her name, let alone how she can beat anyone on a broom. Well no - anybody in their right mind knows better than to challenge Brie to a broom race. That's not the point though, the point is this - what ever the bloody hell this is - he wants it to stop and he wants it to stop now.
His book slams to the table as he rises to his feet. Its going to drive him mad. Utterly mad. He cannot even look at her as the words spill from his lips.
"Come off it already Brie, I don't need to hear that sort of rubbish - its not as if he is actually that good looking you know!"
When has he ever raised his voice to her? When has he ever actually felt mad at her? The questions are spinning in his head as he storms off. He can feel his heart pounding in his chest. What is it? Why is it that now of all times...he doesn't just want to be the best friend?
two goals
one: To find his place in both the muggle and magical worlds and achieve a sort of balance in his life as Amery has his muggle family and his magical 'family' and he cannot picture a life of having to pick between one or the other as they both are important to him. Often times though Amery struggles to feel as if he is a part of either, he has spent seven years split between his two worlds and has found that even the world he was born into he feels disconnected with and the world he was exposed to he has yet to find exactly where he fits in.
two: To make something of himself. Amery used to feel as if he was doomed to forever live in his father's shadow, a man who so many knew because of his sports career. It was early on in life that Amery knew he wanted to make his own name, but he never knew how. In some ways learning he was a wizard felt like a saving grace to Amery, that some how this was his chance to step out of his father's shadow and to do something that would make him finally feel like he was his own man making his own way. He still doesn't know what he will do when he finishes school or just how to actually make something of himself, but he hopes to soon figure this all out.
one failure
third year: Amery never had been the best student. Maybe it was because he was so new to all to this still. He wasn't like those Ravencalw muggleborns who took to magic like a bird takes to air. No, he was more like a rock falling off the highest cliff just waiting to hit the ground and break into a million little pieces. Year one had been a struggle all in its own trying to figure out just what world he was a part of now - not to mention that git Ethan White from slytherin, the boy who taught him just what it meant to be a muggleborn in the magic world.
Bullying was not something that he was accustom to. Having spent his previous years at an exclusive preparatory school he had not found himself exposed to those who thought they were better than himself - if anything he had grown up thinking he had been better than most. Not because he was the smartest - no it was nothing like that, even in his prep school days he suffered because of his ADD - but because of the privilege he felt he was entitled to because of who his father was and just what that meant for his family. But Amery was quick to learn that in the magical world no one cared that he was the son of acclaimed Manchester United footballer Cathal Cambell.
Amery wasn't one to just sit back and take the bullying, maybe he wasn't used to being put in such a situation but he was not in anyway going to be passive about taking the put downs. Throughout his first few years of Hogwarts this bullying lead to countless detentions for acting out and physical fights - something that often lead to him receiving even more sneers for fighting just like a muggle. Soon it was more about fighting than it was about focusing on school. So hard Amery tried to defend himself at only age 13 but between the struggle of trying to figure out magic that was not exactly second nature and the constant bullying issue he had acquired it should have been of little shock to the thirteen-year-old when his head of house sat him down for a serious conversation.
Years of struggling with school had not prepared Amery for what came next. Yes he struggled to find motivation to do his homework often, and yes he did have trouble focusing on lectures more often than not, and yes many of his tests were filled with mindless doodles where there should have been answers but Amery had always made of point of making sure he pushed himself just enough to get by. But this time he hadn't done that. This time he had been too focused on trying to prove himself to his peers, too focus on trying to prove that being a muggleborn - being a mudblood - that it didn't matter as much as the bullies said. But here he was, being told that they thought it best he take his third year over, that it would better prepare him for the school years to come. Yes, Amery had always been a bad student - but he had never been a failure, that was until then.
