Geoff Fitzgerald and Tom Parris had always dreamed of the day they could have a family of their own. Perhaps they were not married by law (marriage between two men after all was not yet recognized in the united kingdom) but they had shared a home together for a number of years now and had long since been talking about just what their house lacked. A child. Or well, children actually. There were many options for the two young men, and while surrogacy would allow for them to have a child that was biologically theirs both men felt that they would love an adopted child just as much as they could love one of their own - after all there were plenty of children in the world who could use a loving family such as their own.
The first two children adopted by Geoff and Tom were twins, two boys - Tobin and Elliot - who were four years old. A year passed and the two men were happy with their little family, except for Tom. For Tom there was still something missing in the family of four. While he adored his sons and loved Geoff it still felt as if the family was not complete. Perhaps it was luck or maybe it was fate that brought sixteen year old Francesca Townsen into his life. The meeting was by chance, a flat tire outside the family's home on her way to see her lawyer. Francesca was five months pregnant at the time and was seeking to give her child - a mistake that was never meant to come of a drunk shag at a friend's party - up for adoption. It was this meeting that left Tom realizing just what he felt was missing in the family.
As much as he loved his young son's Tom had always dreamed of having a baby. For weeks Tom kept thinking about the teenage girl who they assisted. Finally Tom brought the matter to Geoff. A month after first meeting Francesca Tom and Geoff contacted the girl and inquired if she had found a family for her unborn child or not. It was a shot in the dark, but Tom had a good feeling about the situation - he always had been a strong believer that everything happened for a reason. It was almost a month's time before Francesca gave the two men her answer to their proposition. She had taken the time to look into the families her lawyer had selected for her and her mother to consider - but she also considered Tom and Geoff. Seeing how they already had their sons Francesca felt that the two men had proven that they could love someone else's children as their own. Knowing she struggled to love the child inside her she felt the decision to allow Tom and Geoff to adopt it was going to be the best option for this bad situation.
So on October 27th of 2008, after seventeen and three quarters of an hour of labor Amity Cathleen became the newest member of the Parris-Fitzgerald family. Tom knew from the start that their daughter was extraordinary - he just never could have imagined just how extraordinary she truly was. Francesca played no role in Amity's life, she had regarded the child of a mistake as she wasn't even sure who her father had been - as a toddler Amity had little thought about how she had two dads, she was loved by her fathers and brothers enough that for the longest time it didn't seem as if their family was in anyway unusual. In fact, just before her fourth birthday her fathers were married as equal rights for marriage had passed in England, not that young Amity understood the importance of the wedding to her it was just a party which meant cake.
But the bliss of childhood is something that fades when exposed to those all too ready to crush it. When she finally was of school age Amity learned first hand that she did not come from a typical family. The cruelness of children is that which will always be a surprise, but all it took was one hurtful boy saying that neither Tom for Geoff was her real father to bring young Amity's world crashing.
It wasn't that Tom and Geoff hid the fact that Amity was adopted from her, as more the conversations just were not had to explain where she came from. So when a tearful Amity came demanding answers from her fathers some how no matter the words they choose they could not soothe the child for all she heard was that she had been unwanted. Of course had she actually listened she would have heard how she was far from unwanted - she was the missing piece of their family that they had been waiting for, but all Amity knew was that the mother who carried her for nine months had wanted nothing to do with her. Amity had asked once if she could meet the woman who brought her into the world but her fathers told her that it wasn't possible, even though they tried to tell her as gently as they could the words still hurt Amity more than her parents could ever understand.
A once happy and blissful child Amity had become bitter and angry. Deep down Amity knew her father's and brothers loved her - so why hadn't her mother? It was confusing for the girl and no matter how her fathers tried to justify it nothing they said was making things any better. As time passed Amity's bitterness turned into something else, a sadness of sorts that weighed heavy on the young girl. Once so out going Tom and Geoff found their daughter shying away from her peers, turning instead to her fairytales for companionship. It was worrisome to the two men but they knew that Amity needed time to come to terms with the matter on her own and that it couldn't be forces, no matter how desperately they wished they could as they were eager to see their blissful little girl again instead of the sad child they could never seem to comfort.
But instead of finding her way out of her self induced solitude Amity found all the more reason to keep her peers at arms length. Something about her was not normal. Amity couldn't explain it but strange things had a tendency to happen around her. She had become quite talented at bottling up her feelings but she had noticed that at times when she found herself angry things would break or fall off shelves. At first she wrote it off as random happenings - but it happened all too often to be entirely random. Amity kept these thoughts to herself though, not wanting to tell her fathers for fear they might think her mad.
On her eleventh birthday though her secret was brought to light. As she blew out all eleven candles on her cake there came a knock on the door - a knock that would finally show the Parris family just how extraordinary their daughter was. A strangely dressed fellow had requested to come in for a moment to use the tel-e-fone, but what he really wanted to do was explain to the family that their daughter was in fact a young witch. It really was a shock - after all most the witches Amity had ever read about were ugly green women covered in warts. Was that what she was going to become?
It was terrifying sitting in the lounge listening to this man go on about a school called Hogwarts and the hidden world that muggles such as themselves could only dream about. Was this all for real? Her fathers questioned if it was even a good idea to send her off to this school of magic or if she would do better sticking with a normal education. In the end it was decided that Amity should give this new school a try - what was the harm in trying? They had always been a unique family, now they just realized they were a bit more unique than they had originally thought. Of course it was a lot for everyone in the Parris family to wrap their heads around - including Amity's two older brothers.
As the next year passed and Amity found herself at King's Cross she was reminded that no matter what - they all loved her. It was strange but in some ways it was as if they all knew this was going to be Amity's chance to discover just who she really was. The actual train ride to the school was a bit overwhelming for Amity who found herself feeling very shy around all these new people. She did her best to keep to herself for most the journey and only spoke up when it seemed absolutely necessary.
Having thought the train ride to the school was daunting Amity was in no way prepared for the sorting ceremony. As the brim of the hat feel over her head and the voice whispered in her ear Amity wasn't sure what to think. It was a curious thing this talking hat, going on about Slytherins and Ravenclaws - while she had skimmed Hogwarts a History she hardly was recalling just what it meant to be in either house. It felt as if the hat was going on for hours, picking her brain and commenting on how there was plenty to pick through - the knowledge she held and the potential she could be. As the hat bellowed out Ravenclaw Amity was shocked that like those before her the table of Blue and Bronze rose up in excitement and cheers for her - but no one even knew her!
It was hard to hide away as Amity found herself surrounded by so many people who in many ways were like herself. How many of her house mates could loose themselves in a book? How many had felt that knowledge was their only friend? Little by little Amity found herself coming out of the shell she had built all those years ago. As the years went on Amity slowly was returning to the girl her family once knew - well in some ways. She had friends again, she was out going, she didn't hide behind her fairytales. But in some ways she was almost too outgoing for her parents taste. It turned out that much like her mother Amity had a wild side. She liked to go to the older students parties, she liked to sneak the drinks she wasn't yet old enough to get herself, and she liked to let loose and have fun. It lead to some trouble of course, but nothing too damaging. Still her fathers worry she might indulge a little too much and give in to her party side far more recklessly than she should. But you only live once - so you need to make the most of it.
Amity has wonder though - was her mother's family magical? What about her biological father's? Does she have any siblings? Are they magical like her too? Amity has desperately been trying to seek answers from her birth mother but thus far has gotten none. Each returned letter brings about a reckless whirlwind of frustration. Some kids just need to know what it was about them that made it so easy for them to be given up. Let's us all just be friend, And together we can start a new trend.
