Free Style Ah, Lady De Fae! Thank you so much for joining me this evening, you are a remarkably hard woman to get an interview with. "Yes, I do prefer it that way, retains some of the mystery, don't you think?" Of course, and you are quite the mystery. So, shall we begin? Where were you born? And the particularly relevant question, when? "Nouvelle-Aquitaine, in France of course, in the lovely estate I still call home. Of course when I was born it was just the western half of Aquitaine, but you know how things go. Very early 11th century by the way, I believe it was 1107, but after more than nine hundred years, I'm certain you can forgive a lapse in memory." M-most certainly. So, your family owns a fairly large estate, I know. Most land owners, especially here in France, have parceled off their estates but your family has kept it intact. Would you like to tell me anything about your beautiful home? "Happily. Chateau De Fae has been in my family for a thousand years. My great grandfather was a knight, and for his deeds the king gifted him a parcel of land and made him a baron. Now, what was once regarded as a small piece of land, is now regarded as a very, very large estate. If you would glance at the window, you can still see some of the buildings that once made up a farming village that supported and was protected by my grandfather and my father alike. They moved on a long time ago, and eventually the majority of the buildings were destroyed, bar a few for servant quarters and storage." "Chateau De Fae has a little over two hundred acres. These days, most of the nearby land is used for my horses or the gardens. The rest is either fruit orchards or forest. And of course the lake. You simply must take a walk with me before you leave, my gardener does the work of divinity. The manor itself, well it has gone through a few structural changes over the years, but most of it is the original craftmanship my grandfather had commissioned. Even the furniture is original, although I had it all repaired recently. Or... well, I had it all repaired sometime this century at least." Well, as long as it was sometime this centur- I mean, that is lovely. And you have a beautiful estate. So, why don't you tell me something about your family? You have mentioned your father quite a lot, are you too close? "Yes, we are. To the world at large I may only be a baroness, but to my father I have always been a princess. I was only three when he turned you see, and perhaps some people would have left, but my father would never abandon his family. My mother didn't want to be turned, so she is no longer with us, but I asked to be turned when I was twenty five, and he agreed. We built our coven together. I am usually more involved in the politics, but it gets so boring sometimes, so I'm taking a sabbatical." Of course, I'm sure you have to mix things up when you live for hundreds of years. So, no siblings then? "It was the 11th century, of course I have siblings. An older sister, she married well to a man she loved and thanks to her, I have a few dozen great, great, great, great, great grand nieces and nephews running around. I like to track them down sometimes and send lavish gifts labeled "From a long forgotten relative." Been doing it for enough centuries that they have come up with some really interesting theories about who I am. A few of them are even mostly correct." I suspect I would do much the same in your position. So, besides the... vampirism, what was your early life like? "I was to be a baroness, and as such I spent most of my young life being tutored. Reading, writing, languages, weaving, sewing, tatting, knitting, embroidery, horse riding, hunting, diplomacy, manners, elocution, poetry, and management. Perhaps a somewhat richer education than many girls of my station experiences, but my father insisted that I was not to be dependent on anyone, certainly not a husband. Make no mistake, I did marry. It was an advantageous match and that alliance helped our people survive. Ultimately though, it was merely advantageous, and I saw no reason to make him immortal. He was a good man, but a very boring one." Have you had any other significant relationships throughout these centuries? "Many of them. No other marriages, too much paperwork, but many relationships. You can only see so many people into old age though, before it loses any appeal. These days, when I enjoy a human's company, it is only until they reach forty, then it is time for them to move on. I've only ever met one person who I considered making immortal. It was the 16th century, and she was, of all things, a milk maid. Oh you know the image, smooth skinned, bright eyed, head in the clouds, naive to her pure and innocent core. She also threw a full pail at me for some unapologetic staring. Spooked my horse, but I couldn't be mad at her after she spent the next hour helping me find him. I loved her, with all my being, and if she had lived even another week, perhaps I would have turned her. She died in the crossfire of the dutch revolt. Five years left of an eighty year war..." I am truly sorry. Would you like a moment? "No. It was damn near five hundred years ago, do you really think I haven't moved on by now? Next question." Of course, my apologies. Well, I think we can move onto the more casual questions now. First off, you've mentioned you were trained in horse riding, and you still own horses today, is that something you enjoy? "I adored horse riding as a child, and I have never bothered to live without them for any stretch of time. Currently I own three Andalusians, I believe you saw them on your way in, they like to greet visitors. The palomino is Arion, he is my oldest at eight years old. The bay is Galadad, he is only two and I am still training him. The dapple grey is my beloved five year old Diomedes, and my only mare. I buy them from a breeder in Spain when they are eight months old, and I have done all their training myself. Patience is an important thing to learn as a vampire, as is treasuring every second you get with the short lived beings in your life. I don't compete with them of course, but I enjoy training them in every discipline I can think of. Arion will do show jumping, dressage, archery, hunter jumping, mountain trail riding and carriage driving. Diomedes only does a few, she is still young, and Galahad is barely ridable." That sounds intense, you must spend a lot of time with them. Do you have any other pets? "I still have the rooftop aviary maintained for the pigeons we used to keep as messengers. Honestly I still use them as such sometimes, they are trained to go to my father's court, and they are good for sending unurgent updates, just to give the birds some practice. There is a certain charm to it, don't you think? But the pigeons are it. I have kept dogs in the past, and I will keep them again, but my last Beaucheron died of old age more than a decade ago, and I haven't replaced her. There are barn cats wandering the estate at large, but they more or less belong to the servants." So you still keep servants? Would you like to say something about them? "Certainly. I don't have many, but I could hardly keep up with an estate this size on my own, could I? And certainly not while I train the horses, without giving up all of my leisure time. I employ a cook, a maid, a landscaper, a gardener for the flowers, a stablehand and an estate manager. The cook, gardener and stablehand all live on the estate, the others live down in the village a few miles from here. The manager and gardener have been with me for a long time, I will be heartbroken when they leave, but they have already begun training replacements." Something of a family to you, then? "Oh don't be silly, its nothing that dramatic. But well, the flowers will wilt, won't they? Under the care of a new gardener, no matter how skilled. And it takes so long for a new estate manager to learn their way around the finances. Its just inconvenient, having to deal with their replacements every few decades." Alright then. Well, aside from horse riding, do you have any hobbies? "I do believe I have at least a hundred hobbies. Currently, I am cross stitching a life size recreation of one of my old horses, I have been working on it for six months and I expect it to take at least six more. I have also recently rekindled my interest in embroidery, I'm collecting sea shells whenever I visit the beach for riding and I'm trying out basket making with new materials. So far, long stem roses are the prettiest, and most impractical one I've made. Also, I'm learning Lithuanian. The problem with maintaining hobbies as a vampire, is that after 900 years, you have tried pretty much everything, and you just have to keep rotating them." At least you seem to stay busy. Exactly how many languages do you speak? "Hmm... somewhere between fifty and two hundred, I've never counted, and it depends on if you are counting dialects or not. Some of them may be a tad outdated, but I can usually get my point across no matter where in the world I am." Well that is certainly impressive. So, moving on: greatest fear? "Losing the constants in my life, my father or my home for example. I don't like pain, but I've been through enough of it that I don't fear it, and fear of death is for people less powerful than I am." Ah yes, I've heard rumors of your powers. Could you describe them for me? "I can give things an electric charge. I can't just electrocute someone on my own, but I can touch an object and essentially turn it into a one-use taser. That is why I wear this, it's a charm bracelet. Old fashioned with the nice dangling charms that are easy to pull off in a pinch. I can put enough of a charge into any of these, to kill a human or floor a vampire. Always sad to lose one, I do love them all, but my father is always sending me new charms to replace any I have to use." I'm sure you don't have to use it often though, right? "Not often, no. Not anymore. It was one thing when I was a young and pretty woman with no fear of wandering the streets at dark, or when I was the princess of an up-and-coming coven. But now, the streets are somewhat safer, and most covens either respect or fear my father and wouldn't dream of trying to use me against him. I certainly played a part in that, no one has ever tried to kidnap me without immense, and immediate regret." It is hard to imagine anyone seeing you as an easy target, you are remarkably intimidating. "Images require cultivation, and practice." Very true. Alright then, one last question: What are your plans for the future? "Well, things are getting boring around here, so I suppose I'm looking to shake things up a bit. We'll see what comes along." Good answer. Well Lady De Fae, thank you very much for your time. "Of course, you've made for a relatively interesting day. And look, we still have enough light for a walk in the gardens, shall we?" Let's us all just be friend, And together we can start a new trend. |
