Muggle London, a little escape from the reality that he called life. Didn't everyone deserve a little escape on their birthday? In some ways it felt strange to Aleksi - after all he was no longer a teenager. Maybe he had become a man years ago, after all once you take your life into your hands you do become a man. But this was something different a new chapter almost. Maybe one chapter closer to living the life he really wanted.
It wasn't as if he was expecting to spend the day with anyone special. He was the middle of three children, there would be no birthday party from his parents, those days were long gone. Truth be told there hardly had been much celebration around his birthday - ever. Never having been the popular kid school wasn't much different from home. Of course both his siblings had acknowledged him, Mikhail his elder brother had already sent his regards and Yuliya being in her sixth year was only able to send an owl wishing him happiness in the year to come and a small gift she had made herself. His parents, well his mother had seen him that morning when he visited - his father, he was fine with not seeing him today.
Perhaps he could have put forth more of an effort to throw a gathering for himself, instead though he had sent only a handful of notes letting those who might care know where he would be celebrating that night. He wouldn't really be Aleksi if he had been trying to throw something extravagant - after all he was only the middle Ivankov, how was his birthday actually an important date? His cousin Valeriya had her birthday nine days earlier, there were things he envied about her - envy didn't look good on anyone though. Jealousy was a hard feeling to rid yourself of though. At least she was living her dream - it was more than he could say about himself.
The night was early so he could hardly be bothered that he was alone. Maybe alone was what he really wanted. Still was he really alone if he was surrounded by muggles? He had been talked into playing pocket billiards with a set of muggle women who had so kindly bought him a beer as well. In some ways it was amusing to Aleksi how easy muggles were to impress. It was a fine line you tread when you interact with muggles, thankfully he had been working on improving his interactions with them over the years - he thought he made a rather convincing muggle these days. Still, something about them - muggles, they found others so fascinating and they would never understand why. Or maybe it was that he knew he'd never see any of them again. When you know you're only going to know someone for a night it always adds a new level of fascination after all.
He wasn't just here to be captivated by muggles though. He was here to celebrate himself and have a good time. Maybe he was being too friendly with the women, but he was having fun. "The trick is you need to keep both your eyes open when you line up your shot." As he aided one of the women in aligning her shot he offered the advice - not that it would improve her game, she clearly was not trying to win. For now though Aleksi was happy for the company and the entertainment. Still his eyes would drift to the door every so often wondering if anyone who he had invited out would feel inclined to join him for drinks, billiards, and muggles. What a way to ring in his twenties.
